Throttle Management Initiative

June 19, 2015 by Mary Danen

Friday June 19th, 2015 :: 10:00 a.m. CDT

As we enter the summer months, the Sheboygan Police Department will again incorporate the “Throttle Management” initiative that primarily focuses on enforcement of loud and illegal exhaust systems. The summer months typically see an increase in complaints related to loud exhausts, often aggravated by excessive acceleration. The Sheboygan Police Department understands that loud exhaust systems create disorder and affects the quality of life in our neighborhoods.

The “Throttle Management” initiative is also designed to educate vehicle owners of laws pertaining to required equipment and operation of a vehicle.

WI Statute 347.39 requires that all motor vehicles have a muffler that is properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise or smoke. It also prohibits modifying a muffler in a manner which amplifies or increases noise.

Sheboygan Ordinance 118-6 prohibits anyone from creating unnecessary or annoying noise by squealing tires or excessive acceleration of the engine.

“We encourage all motorists to exercise “throttle management” so that all of our residents and visitors can have a peaceful and enjoyable summer” – Sgt Kusznyski.
