On November 5, 2018, a WI WINS tobacco compliance check was done at 28 local retailers in Sheboygan. During the checks only one retailer sold tobacco products to a juvenile. This is a 96% compliance rate and a positive success rate compared to past checks.
The Sheboygan Police Department has addressed the violation and provided guidance and training to the retailer who was not in compliance.
WI WINS program is coordinated and supervised by the Northeastern WI Area Health Education Center, using volunteer juveniles to purchase or attempt to purchase tobacco at retail shops. They spot check retailers, that sell tobacco, several times a year to measure how they are complying with Wisconsin statutes regarding the sale of tobacco products to minors.
Retailers are expected to train their employees on proper procedures for sales of tobacco products. There is free state-approved training available on Wisconsin tobacco sales law, on-line at WITobaccoCheck.org. This training includes online study guides with a quiz and a certificate of completion.
By knowing and obeying the laws of tobacco sales, you are helping Wisconsin youth stay healthy and tobacco free. Sheboygan and WIsconsin WINS when retailers follow the laws and keep our youth safe.
