The Sheboygan Police Department has received numerous phone calls regarding a telephone scam. The su
bjects call posing as the IRS demanding that the victim pay a bogus tax bill. They may ask the victim to send money via a prepaid debit card or wire transfer. They may also leave “urgent” call back requests on the phone. The IRS will not call you to demand immediate payment, require that you pay your taxes a certain way, or ask for any credit/debit card numbers over the phone. These scammers may even threaten to bring in police or other agencies to arrest you for not paying. If you receive such a call, do not give them any information and simply hang up. If you know or think you owe money to the IRS, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.
