WE Energies is Reporting Customer Scam

September 18, 2015 by Mary Danen

The Sheboygan Police Department received information that WE Energies wished to inform customers of a potential scam involving their business.

The scam involves the victim receiving a call from a person stating they are a representative of WE Energies and would like to discuss an unpaid bill. The scammer states that if the bill is not paid, WE Energies will disconnect service. The scammer then instructs the victim to purchase a pre-paid debit card, call them back, and provide the debit card numbers. The scammers target residential owners and businesses. One of the added tactics by the scammers is to have the victim call back a number that has a recorded WE Energy announcement in order to sound legitimate.

The Sheboygan Police Department asks that individuals receiving calls with similar scam tactics verify information with their actual service provider. It is not typical for a legitimate business to ask a customer to acquire a pre-paid debit card and provide information over the phone.
