Update: Due to a very high volume of applications, we regret to announce that the 2020 Citizen Academy is now closed to new applicants. We will be reaching out to all applicants soon. Thank you for your interest! If you were unable to apply this year, please be on the lookout for our 2021 Academy next spring.
The Sheboygan Police Department will be hosting its 25th Annual Sheboygan Police Department Citizen Academy starting on March 17, 2020. This program runs through May 26, 2020. The program provides citizens an opportunity to gain knowledge and a better understanding of the vision, values, goals, and operations of the Sheboygan Police Department. The Citizen Academy also continues to enhance the collaboration and partnership between the community and its police department.
The Sheboygan Police Departments Citizen Academy is designed to be interactive and involves lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, and an open floor for discussion. It is important for the participant to attend each week, as each week of the course is built upon the preceding week.
Topics, to name a few, that will be presented by officers of the Sheboygan Police Department along with guest speakers consist of neighborhood policing, criminal investigations, victim’s rights, drug use within our community, and traffic enforcement. Additional activities involve hands-on participation, such as, high-risk and low-risk traffic stops, shoot-don’t shoot exercises, a tour of the Sheboygan County Jail, along with firearms instruction and use at the range.
Classes will be held on Tuesday evenings at the Sheboygan Police Department, 1315 N 23 Street, from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM. Participants will be provided credentials, binders, and all class materials. There is not a cost at all to attend the Citizen Academy.
The Sheboygan Police Department Citizen Academy is open to adults age 18 and older. Those with felony arrests or convictions will not be accepted. Background checks will be conducted on all applicants. Letters of acceptance or regrets will be mailed out to applicants.
